Woody’s Viewpoint

Being a rocket scientist isn’t always the glory and glamour you might think. Like all jobs there are times you get assigned to tasks that just are not that sexy.

The Space Shuttle External Tank is the big brown tank in the middle of the vehicle. It is covered in a light weight insulation foam. The foam is the same stuff you buy at Home Depot called “Great Stuff”.

One interesting thing about it is the woodpeckers love to build nests in the foam.

This is a problem.

You get assigned to the Pecker Patrol Team. You get a shirt and everything.

But for the woodpeckers its heaven.

Here’s how Woody explained it to his buds;

“Hey, you guys are not gonna believe what I found ! woody

I know it sounds impossible, but just hear me out. I found this tree that’s like…150 feet tall. I am serious and it is really fat too…it is about 25 feet in diameter. Plus no branches.

OK…you ready for this? The bark is really soft. I mean really soft. You don’t have to bang your head against it a 1000 times to make a nest. And the climate control is out of this world! It stays cool on hot days and warm on cool days.

I swear, I built a 3-bedroom 2-bath condo in about 10 minutes it was sooooo soft!

Woody…….dude….you need to lay off the pine sap man…

No, I am serious. And get this; it has an ocean front view!

That’s right!
Read my beak !
It’s on the BEACH!

The tree is so huge it has room for everyone. I mean all of us!

…And you know those 2-legged animals? The ones that smell really bad and pollute everything? The ones that are always throwing stuff at us, shooting at us, dishing out all kinds of harassment?

Well these smellies just stand there in white coats and scratch their heads!”

  1. It is around 4am…maybe 4:30am…I read this space shuttle/woodpecker story and just cracked up. I could visualize the entire thing and I didn’t have to think hard. Now that’s entertainment. My cat, sitting right here reading it as well, laughed too. Have you ever seen a cat laugh?

  2. Hell Mark haven’t you talked NASA into shrink wrapping that damn thing yet???
